The Rider-Waite Tarot, first published in 1909, has become a cornerstone of Western tarot systems. Designed by mystic Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by artist Pamela Colman Smith, this deck pioneered the use of full illustrations for the Minor Arcana. Between 1909 and approximately 1940, five early editions of the Rider-Waite Tarot were released. Four of these editions have been retrospectively labeled with random letters: Pam-A, Pam-B, Pam-C, and Pam-D.
